Who are you?

Oh me? I’m Jenny, and some people call me, The Real Food Scout.  I got the nickname because I’m into food. Like, really into food. Over the years I’ve been known as the go-to person for all things food. What to eat, Where to eat, What to buy to eat, What to make to eat, What to buy to gift someone to eat. You get the idea.

My scouting used to be any tasty food/product/restaurant/etc, but it changed 7 years ago when I cleaned up my Standard American Diet (S.A.D. -I didn’t make that up) of mostly processed foods. I began cooking and eating more REAL FOOD (think less cream of mushroom soup green bean casserole, more fresh, whole fruits & vegetables), AND, seeking out mindful companies/restaurants making good food with better quality ingredients.

The other part of my mission. Well, I had two young kids, and I didn’t have a ton of time making fancy, complicated, REAL FOOD recipes, so I found ways to simply my life in the kitchen and want to share that with you.  My tips and lifestyle lets call it, will change your life. That may sound a little grandiose, but it’s true.

What is Real Food?

Hmmm, well, here is an example.  An apple is real.  Apple flavored or concentrate, is not. Grab the CHEAT SHEET .

As Michael Pollan would put it “eat real food, not too much of it, and more plants than meat. Or, put another way, get off the modern western diet, with its abundance of processed food, refined grains and sugars, and its sore lack of vegetables, whole grains and fruit”.

More detailed breakdown:

Real Food: Whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, eggs, fish, meat, poultry and dairy

Fake Food: highly processed foods that were recently invented.  Filled with chemicals and additives to improve appearance, shelf life and taste (tons of additional sugar, salt, & fake fat) and have little nutritional value. These foods are genetically modified, (or given genetically modified feed),  sprayed heavily with pesticides, and given hormones and antibiotics.

What will I learn here?

You’ll learn to be your own Real Food Advocate, or as I call it, your own Real Food Scout.  As a Real Food Scout, you’ll be seeking out better, real, whole foods.  It’s not complicated, and this shift will help simplify your life and better your health.

I don’t cook (or hate cooking) How can I feed myself and my family better without much effort?

Where should we eat lunch/dinner?

I don’t fuckin know. I don’t know you or where you live. 😉 But, for real,  I will tell you this…when the time comes to eat out, seek out mindful restaurants who give a shit about quality food.  Look for places that are making foods from scratch, getting their foods from local farms, using more organic foods, and buying humanely raised (grassfed/pasture raised) meats/dairy/poultry.  It doesn’t have to be fancy, Chipotle is a great example of a company trying to do better. Even just google maps “organic restaurants” in the area you’re in can be helpful too.

What packaged foods can I buy? Where can I get them?

There are so many better packaged food options available these days and the market is growing and growing.  Stay in touch via Newsletter, Instagram & Twitter to keep up with the RFSFinds and where you can buy them.  My RFS Shop is still under construction, but also check out Thrive Market.  This is a mindful company and great place to find good packaged foods and pantry items.

I like eating crappy food, feeling and looking tired and hungry all the time. What can I do?

Go to another website. It was nice having you. I cannot help you unless you are ready to change.  Maybe you have heard the saying, you can lead a horse to water?
